The top-tier AU/NTL Master of Science in Organization Development educates mid-career adults to become leading OD practitioner-scholars, external or internal OD consultants, executives, staff, or other roles.
What distinguishes our program?
A Leader in the Field: Since 1980 AU/NTL has been a leader in organization development education when late AU Professor Morely Segal established with NTL President Edith Whitfield Seashore the AU/NTL program.
Unique Curriculum Strengths: AU/NTL uniquely focuses on use of self, experiential learning, and diversity. The commitment to these areas is derived from the notable philosophy and history of the NTL Institute and American University's outstanding dedication to public service.
The Cohort Model: Students progress through the program as part of a cohort, an intact learning community. The cohort provides support for learning as well as a model for study of groups.
For the Working Professional: The AU/NTL program is designed for working professionals. The experiences of those in mid-career contributes to the richness of the classroom experience.
International and Bethel Residencies: AU/NTL's International Residency is designed to prepare skilled, knowledgeable organization development practitioners who are culturally competent to work in an increasingly global marketplace. The Bethel Residency brings students together for an intensive week of study and connects them with NTL's birthplace in Maine.
The Action Research Process: In the action research approach developed by Kurt Lewin, systems (people, organizations and communities) learn and change through a sequence in which participants are involved in planning, data collection, action and analysis. This cycle is a bedrock of OD practice.
AU/NTL students learn the action research cycle at the outset of their OD education and build on that model throughout the program. They learn to question assumptions, exercise curiosity, and to apply sound research strategies beginning with data collection and diagnosis.
Powerful Alumni Network: At present, more than 1200 AU/NTL alumni work in the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors. AU/NTL graduates are distinguished by their ability to work successfully with the human element within complex organizations facing rapid change. These accomplished alumni provide a powerful network for AU/NTL students as they progress in their careers.
