For Pamela Deese, the ties that bind her to American University and the School of Public Affairs (SPA) are strong and deep.

Pam arrived at AU in the mid-1970s from Cresskill, New Jersey, where she had been a top scholar and student council president at her high school. On a path to becoming an attorney, she put herself through AU in addition to receiving scholarships. Deese credits the encouragement she received at AU, as well as the strong friendships and student leadership opportunities for making a difference in her personal and professional lives. An example of AU's influence in Pam's life includes her story of her first job in the field of law. When Pam was still a student at AU, a fellow Delta Gamma sister and AU alumna, Nancy Adams, helped her secure a position at the United States Trade Representatives Office, where she ended up working for nearly six years. This initial exposure to international trade law inspired Pam to excel in her field and her career.
